Nefertiti and her roles within the family.
Nefertiti
and Akhenaten had six daughters and within all historical accounts of the family’s
relationships with one another they were a loving, caring and close family. In
many sources of evidence from the period unusually the family are all depicted
together rather then the pharaoh by himself. They are also shown embracing,
worshiping together, participating in activities together and relaxing all
which show how close and happy the family were together.
In year 14 Akhenaten and Nefertiti’s second daughter Meketaten died scenes from Armana show a rare insight into the private life of the family as they both record the death of the daughter but also show a distraught Akhenaten, Nefertiti and the other daughters during their mourning process. During this year Akhenaten is also said to have promoted his eldest daughter Meritaten giving her the title 'mistress of the house'. this is also around the time that Nefertiti disappeared, The eldest daughter then took over many of the roles of Nefertiti including worshiping and promoting the Aten religion.
